Drone 01, better known as "Dewey" from the 1971 movie "SILENT RUNNING", is one cool looking droid. The kit is a solid resin masterpiece, crafted by Russ Raney of Model Prisoners. The model is pretty large, about 5" wide and 6" tall. It is a very clean resin kit. The molds are nice, just a small seam that takes a little sanding on the body. It came with a total of 9 parts (Body, 2 legs, 3 feet, panel, light lens, and 'arm'). Also included rubber hose.
I did a bit of customization on the kit as well. I scratch built my own panel under the 'headlight'. I wanted the true look of the wires and details here. I used wire wrap from Radio Shack, a small LED, and scratch built the little purple light out of styrene. The whole panel was also made of styrene. The next modification was to make the hose 'couplings'. I used a 1/72 scale tank kit, and luckily, the tree was made as a hexagon. So I cut small, 1/8" pieces, drilled them out, and inserted the hoses, and attached to the legs and the body. I painted them in the metallic blue, to match the couplings on the movie drone. Next, I sanded down the 'floppy disks' on top, and made my own out of styrene, and built a rectangular panel for them to 'slide' into. I used Bare Metal foil to get the reflection on the 'headlight', as well as polished it. Other than that, this little beauty is all stock. It's a beautiful kit, and I'll be getting two more to make Huey and Louie soon. Below are a few pics of this fine model. I'll be making a base for it shortly.
